Can I Apply for U.S. Citizenship Before My Wedding?
Hello everyone, I’m seeking advice regarding my U.S. citizenship application timeline. I am currently a green card holder, and my five-year residency requirement will be fulfilled on January 20, 2025. My wedding is planned for October 2025, and my fiancée, who resides in India, is not a green card holder. I am unsure whether I should apply for citizenship before my wedding or wait until after. My main concerns are: 1. Will applying for citizenship affect my ability to sponsor my fiancée for a visa in the future? 2. Are there any benefits to applying before my wedding? 3. Could it delay or complicate the process of bringing my fiancée to the U.S.? I would greatly appreciate any guidance or personal experiences from those who’ve been in a similar situation. Thank you!

why would you even consider renewing your green card as opposed to applying for citizenship? anyway, to answer your question, it would be in your best interest to become a citizen as your spouse will not have to wait until a visa is available. Citizens petitions take about half the time a green card holders does.

apply for citizenship because green card holder petitions for spouses take waaaaaay longer… especially when trying to sponsor someone from India because there’s a limit to the number of visas per country. no limit for spouses of citizens
