hi. I renew my DL but was very complicated. I attended to renew my DL with my i797 pendjng AOS, and the officer said that this was not enough, and he didn't accept it because he said that my I797 was a copy (it was the original one from USCIS). after arguing for a while, he finally sent my case to DHS using my passport info and fingerprints (not my Alien number or I797). after 2 weeks a got a mail from DHS saying that I am lawful in USA and I can renew my DL with an unexpired passport. I renew my DL for one year

hi, I am in Dallas, TX and I got my driver’s license with just the I-485 receipt notice :) they will give you a limited term driver license call them and make an appointment and make sure to bring your I-485 receipt notice and I-94 then you will sign an SSN waiver since you don’t have - also tell them to verify you using the alien number on your I-485 receipt if your I-94 is expired.

you have to wait till you get your work permit.

you don’t need work permit or ssn to get a driver’s license in Texas - you just need i485 receipt notice and I-94

you can get a driver's license with receipts. I did. if you live in a big city make sure you go to a less busy office outside of the city. busy offices likely are impatient and will send you home for no reason. also make sure you have proof of address etc.

@mauricio s yes you can get a driver license with unexpired 94. I have done it couple of months ago. you take your passport, your receipt notices, old driver license ( if you have one) , they will apply to verify your i94, it takes about 10 days and then once you receive verification you can go again and apply for driver license.

really? it took 1 minute to verify for me. guess I was lucky.

I don't think it expires. it's just proof of legal entry. I think they already did electronic i94 8 years ago? cause in that case you can just print it from the website.

@mauricio s, I dont think thats how it works. i have been here longer. yet mine is unexpired. its worth trying I think. i did mine on gessner dmv in Houston if that helps

yes they do it electronic now , i have my i-94 printed already im gonna give them a call to set an appointment and see what we can do. if not i wait till the EAD 🤷🏻‍♂️

yes i remember that, it was back in the 2005 when i came with my parents for vacations they gave us a i-94 paper i thinks was green or blue color i'm not sure 🤣 thanks for the info !

@S A yes I was able to in Texas, give them your alien number listed in your I-485 receipt and it will work

Today I went to DMV with the i-485 receipt. I could not renew my current license but they sent something for a second verification process to USCIS. Is anyone familiar with that process?

hi Nish D, yes they did that when I was renewing my license. they sent the request to uscis ( told me it takes up to three weeks I believe) . then once it was verified I got a letter in the mail, saying it was verified ( took about 10 days) and I went back to dmv and renewed my license

@ h h or anybody else that can chip in I just got my temporary drivers permit today in Texas after so much complications and constant argument with the dps agents. little back story: I’m currently pending on an AOS marriage based and while I filled my application I was asked if I have an SSN I said “no”and then was asked if I would like to be given one which I answered Yes to. 3 weeks ago I got my notice with my A number and right after I got it I applied for a drivers license with dps. DPS put in a save request which was pending till the night after I got my biometrics with DHS done so I figured they were waiting on my biometrics before they proceed to verify my lawful presence. also my uscis case updated same night after biometrics with case is being actively reviewed today at the dps the agent asked me have you ever applied for, been issued or assigned a social security number i said no I haven’t been assigned one and told her I also even signed the waiver the last time I was here. but I went on ahead to tell her just for transparency that I did tell USCIS to let SSA issue me when they deem me eligible. well this lady told me in that case my application will have to be void because I applied for an SSN and the affidavit states you are not eligible for a drivers license ” if you applied for SSN and you don’t have it” well I told her “Ma’am I didn’t apply for an SSN with SSA and, USCIS and SSA are two different agencies. I told her USCIS probably haven’t even sent my SSN application to SSA yet. And to the best of my knowledge at the time I signed my affidavit, I did not have an SSN Number assigned to me. I called her supervisor and her supervisor was more understanding but her supervisor also told me something that scared me and I don’t know if I should be worried she told me “if indeed I have applied for an SSN and that I have been assigned an SSN number that the state of texas might have to cancel my drivers license and that I will have to answer to the state of texas for lying on my affidavit” has anybody experienced this ? I genuinely do not have an ssn number and I doubt uscis is far in to my case to have issued me one and even if they have can’t I just go to dps when I have my ssn in hand and update my details? do they just want to confirm I really don’t have an ssn and I’m trying to withhold a vital piece of identification?

@redlight greenlight you are fine! my husband applied for an ssn and then applied for a DL while the ssn application was pending. At that point we were not sure if he would be approved or denied an ssn because of his k1 visa status. we disclosed that information when he applied for a DL. They said it was fine because he had not been issued an ssn yet. As soon as his SSN came in, we went back to the dmv and had it added to his DL information. You’re doing everything legally just make sure to add your ssn info when the time comes

I also even told them the same thing, I told them “when my ssn comes in I just need to bring it here to get updated and they said yes” I think they just have a bunch of inexperienced people working there. somewhat unrelated; they even messed up my name on my application. when I called Austin to confirm my lawful presence verification. Austin told me that the DPS agent that put in my information did it wrong, and they switched my last name and first name. had to make them correct it today 🤦🏾

Houston, TX. Yes we had to go 3 times for them to do everything properly and each time the agents gave so much attitude.

it's so ridiculous. like I'm even helping them keep tabs on me. DHS relies more on the DMV database for information when looking for immigrants. it's just sad that they are so uninformed and ignorant. I have to go in again one more time to give them proof of my physical driver's test with a 3rd party. can't wait to get all of this over with, hopefully, I get my green card before my current driver's license expires. because it's just so traumatic.

@SA were you able to get a Texas DL with expired I-94? I went there today and they told me I need a valid I-94 to proof identity. Couldn’t get it because my I-94 is expired. First time getting a DL. 😕

Yes my husband renewed a few days after his i-94 had expired. can you try a different dmv? or go back and ask to speak to a supervisor?

I went yesterday and was denied b/c the i94 had expired - stumbled on here looking for alternatives or ways to simply get a permit/license

@Blessed, which DPS did u go in houston? I went to Rosenberg and they said since my i94 is expired , I need to wait for EAD. Can someone advise what is limited term drivers license ? And what is the process of verification through USCIS calked?
