they didn’t renew my drivers license… they gave me “ driver’s authorization card “😭

I’ve never heard anything about Drivers autorization card 🧐

yeah you can only drive with it said “ NOT VALID FOR ID “ on the card ..

@ C A do you mean they asked for the EAD card in order to get your license?

yup.. ead or GC.. the receipt wasn’t enough to get me license.. that’s ridiculous

if you have a valid SSN you can renew your license with that alone, i have a Real ID Driving license and i think u can renew that online.

@ Sal Q I tried to renew online because I have a real ID but it asked me to produce immigration documents such as EAD card (not receipt ) were you able to get it renewed online based on receipt ?

@C A thanks for the info- and yes this is ridiculous especially given how long it is for us to get either card. frustrating

They should renew it with receipt notice they have a rule mentioning on Mass.gov website as well. Couple people posted a week ago and if you see their comments in Community section of this app. Also I got mine renew from Fall river RMV it was pretty easy nothing has asked rather than Recipt Notices and I had my Ols SSN from Student Visa. Go to Fall River RMV they will be helpful. Couple people have went their and got it done

I managed to get a license a few weeks ago. made a post on a reddit that helped a bit. I am copying here Hi, I saw this post while I was preparing documents to attempt to renew my license, I am waiting on AOS, don't have the EAD yet, and the license arrived today! So I wanted to help in any way leaving what I did and all the relevant details of my case. So I was in OPT and had a REAL ID Drivers license from MA expiring Jan 15 2022 (1 month after my OPT ended). Due to COVID the RMV works through appointments and there was none nearby my place (Watertown MA) but the RMV website recommended to go to AAA since they can renew. I made an appointment for the AAA in Waltham, MA for Jan 12th and as a backup I made an appt the next day (Jan 13th) and only found one in Easthampton MA (1h 30 min drive - one way). What I brought: My Passports (the one that had the student VISA and the one that is current because the first one expired), my SS card, correspondence to verify address, all my I797 NOTICES (I did my bio already and the first one from all my forms) , and I printed all the laws and memos people had posted here from the [MA.gov](https://MA.gov) website and highlighted where it says that if your AOS is pending you can get a drivers license for up to 12 months. I went to AAA and after explaining , showing the laws, the guy took my picture, check my eyesight and started putting the info in. He said that the system wasn't allowing him that I need the Greencard , but I keep pointing to the law , then he said, the system is asking my for your I94 , so I send it to him he printed it and scanned-send it to RMV and the system got stucked again. He called RMV , they said to wait, so he told me to come back tomorrow. I go back and the system get stuck again (my situation broke the RMV system?) , he pointed out that my I94 passport number didn't correspond to my current passport number, I explain, he said he couldn't do anything else, that I should go to RMV and most likely I would get a 2 month Drivers License. Lucky I scheduled that backup appointment in Easthampton. I get on the drive there. Arrive, there is no one there, I check in, they send me to the booth, I hand in old license, I797, I94 and the woman got an error, ask the supervisor how to fix it, she did, then she said it appears your picture and exam are here already, I tell her that I first went to an AAA but the system got stuck. She said ah, well here you go , and handed me a temp paper License for 2 months. I drive back half happy that I did it but worried what if its only 2 month. Today 6 days later I get the Driver License card, still a REAL ID valid for 12 months (as the law says). In the end it worked so it can be done!

@ Gabe thank you for sharing a very detailed experience. i have a question- did you try filling out the online application for drivers license renewal or you just went to the RMV with all the documents you mentioned? i recall that due to Covid they want you to do everything online first before going to the rmv. i was wondering how I could fill it out since the options don’t indicate that we are still waiting for our approvals.. thanks for any insights!

@gabe golc I didn’t understand how did you ended up getting the new DL.. did they mail it to you?

@Y H , I first attempted online and after a few days got an email that they couldn't verify my status (although I used the same form that I showed at the RMV), so the email said to find an appointment to go to an RMV office . @C A yes, first I got the paper one (temporary) at the RMV and they said that in 5 to 10 days I will get the license in the mail (that is the standard in MA regardless of status).
